The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art Executive Director, Alexandra Kennedy

Tues. Aug 21 6:30 - 8:00 ALEXANDRA KENNEDY at the Rines Auditorium, in partnership with the Portland Public Library

“The Very Eric Carle: His Life and Legacy”

Alexandra Kennedy, executive director of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, shares insights into the career of one of the most influential picture book artists of our time. The lecture will include rarely seen pictures of his earliest work as a poster artist, footage of him at work on a Very Hungry Caterpillar collage in his studio, and a look inside the museum that he and his late wife Barbara founded to ensure picture book art would finally get the international recognition it deserves.

Alexandra says:

“Picture books are such a positive force—they inspired us as kids to love art and literature. Revisiting them as an adult is such magic! Until I was here ( at The Eric Carle), I did not completely understand just what a unique community of people create and publish picture books. It is such an inspiring group of men and women—playful, supportive, funny, kind, and endlessly ingenious.  I truly think we are living in another golden age for picture books.”

In a 2016 NewsWhistle interview with Laura LaValle, Alexandra shows her appreciation for the creators of picture books and her acknowledgement of their role in inspiring creative forces in children and adults alike. The Eric Carle museum is one of only a few of its kind and a treasured destination for anyone who has ever loved a picture book.

A lecture for artists and illustrators, authors and educators, librarians, museum afficionados and book lovers alike!
