James Macdonald: Hands-On Workshop With Master of Marquetry

  • MAZZA Studio 54 Lyndon Avenue Peaks Island, ME, 04108 United States (map)

Join Illustration Institute and James Macdonald, a 2026 Maine Arts Commission Maine Artist Fellow, recognized for his artistic excellence across his overall career. James will be an ii artist in residence with his wife, illustrator Lucky Platt. Both artists live in Burnham, ME.

Marquetry is a very expressive form of surface embellishment - think illustrating with veneer wood. Jim says “I try to catch the mood of my marquetry design as well as the visual impact of the different woods used. I then make further design choices to strengthen this mood.”

Jim creates world renowned custom marquetry on guitars. He says: “I imagine the music played - smooth jazz to bendy note blues to hard driving rock. I am delighted to see and hear guitarists play my instruments, bringing new and unexpected voices into play.”

James will provide a hands-on workshop for beginners and seasoned woodworkers alike, sharing examples of his work, demonstrating the basic techniques of marquetry, and provide attendees with a “speed” version of the craft using basic tools and tips that students can expand upon after the class.

Drawing skills are not necessary for this class; materials will be provided. Class is open to all ages 10 and up, and a materials fee of $25.00 is required.

Please register with Nancy@illustrationinstitute.org, and bring a check or cash to class.
