A master wood artist based in Burnham, ME, Jim Macdonald's furniture, wall art, and solid body electric guitars feature marquetry--an intricate process of composing illustrations and decorative elements using diverse wood veneers. Jim will demo and share samples of his marquetry art process and finished work, and make some time for music, too! Jim's work is often steeped in narrative, taking inspiration from song lyrics, album art, and favorite books. In early 2025, Jim curated Free Verse, an international exhibition of contemporary marquetry artists at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, ME. He has created marquetry designs for Gibson Guitar's Custom Shop and Hinckley Yachts, and his Eat a Peach Tribute guitar is in the permanent collection of the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House in Macon, GA.
Jim and Lucky Platt are part of Bunkhouse Studios, producing joint creative ventures and collaborative art including monotype, drypoint and relief printmaking in small editions, book arts, paper sculpture/mixed media works, pyrography/marquetry art, crankies and stop motion animation.
